Review of Son of God (2014) by Manny C — 06 Mar 2014
Jesus Christ heals the sick and feeds the poor in this latest telling of the life story of the Messiah. That's really all it is, all tell and one lame show. Spun off from producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's 2013 History Channel mini-series The Bible, Son of God isn't so much a film as it is a checklist, faithfully going through the life events of Christ, from birth to crucifixion, all without anything resembling a vision or point of view.
The performances, if one can call them that, add nothing. Portugese model-turned-actor Diogo Morgado is the man himself, and he hasn't an ounce of charisma on him. It's capital 'B' bland.
Say what you will of The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of The Christ (I happen to like them) but they at least had some real provocation to them and a point that was something besides making money.
This movie seems to think its provocative by virtue of its very existence (Jesus and God at the multiplex ooooooo) and maybe there's a smidge of truth to that. But I'm not seeing it. If Christian audiences only have this and one crappy Kirk Cameron movie after another, then part of me actually feels sorry for them.
