Review of Son of God (2014) by Jason D — 07 Mar 2014
On religious terms Son of God was very well done but on cinematic terms it made Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ" seems like an Oscar winning picture. It was one of the dullest movies I've seen in a long time.
I think with this one though instead of "trying" to go full force in the audience's faces like TPOTC, this one held back so much it's like they weren't even trying. I also felt like this one was unbearably cheesy.
.. like really REALLY cheesy. I definitely feel like the movie had a lot of potential if the film-makers would have tried harder they could have had a half decent story. They also seemed to cram so much into the story; I think they tried too hard to cover too much.
I understand that some people would say this movie is Powerful and inspirational etc. I mean it wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, although I wouldn't be surprised if no one is talking about this movie this time next year.
I wasn't a huge fan of the actor as the lead either; they could have picked someone a lot better. And then of course he was white which was probably the most annoying thing to do with this movie. I just felt like this movie had way too many flaws and like I said it was a little annoying because like I said I really feel like it could have had potential.
What I didn't expect was that this one was going to be worse than TPOTC. This one wasn't as controversial or as historically inaccurate, but it was just so boring. Diogo Morgado's performance as Jesus was probably the most boring by far.
It wasn't anything new either, I felt like I've seen this movie a hundred times.... Because it's literally been done a hundred times, and there's PLENTY more coming this year, let's just hope they're better than this one.
The camera work felt really lazy as well, way too many shots of walking... walking... walking... and yup you guessed it... walking. It was like Lord of the Rings meets The Bible.
