Review of Son of Frankenstein (1939) by Matthew L — 23 Jan 2010
I enjoyed Boris Karloff's performance here, I only wish he'd have been given the chance to develop the role of the Monster as well as he was able to in the first two Frankenstein films. Nevertheless, he does well with what he is given; the scene with him looking in the mirror and being disgusted at his own reflection is especially moving.
With that being said, Son of Frankenstein as a whole is too silly for it's own good (and obviously provided Mel Brooks with plenty of material for his parody, Young Frankenstein). Bride of Frankenstein was over the top, but in a good way. This was just ridiculous. With no attempt to continue the story in a believable way, and characters that I couldn't care about, The Son definitely does not live up to the work of his father.
