Review of Somm (2013) by Loy M — 05 Sep 2013
Loy Machedo's Movie Review - Somm (2013).
Seldom if ever do I get Intrigued, Interested and Impressed by documentaries. There are good ones which do come out once a while but the chances of finding a great one is rather very rare. Somm is among those documentaries I categorize as rare.
What makes this documentary so unique is its realistic feel, the raw emotions that emancipate from the characters and the connection that buildup as we move into the lives of these 4 individuals - who have one of the toughest exams in the world to face - The Master Sommelier Exam.
A sommelier or wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing. The role is highly specialized. And in the course of the documentary, you will understand why this exam is one of the toughest in the world - where around 200 people appear for the exam after nearly 12 months of not just studying but being obsessed by it - only 6 pass the exam.
The documentary is truly one of a kind and you will truly appreciate what goes into this fine art. And the manner in which it has been presented is nothing short of spectacular.
I loved watching this documentary, enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it to everyone to watch it. In fact this documentary kind of enkindled the fire in me to work hard and focus on my dreams.
Overall rating - 10 out of 10.
