Review of Somewhere Only We Know (2015) by Ray H — 01 Mar 2015
This is a romantic drama set in China. We follow the love lives of a young woman and her post-WWII grandmother. The grandmother's story is told in smooth flashbacks. The story was modestly interesting. But, when viewed as a whole; there was not much going on. This film was aimed squarely at young women. The film was beautifully shot.
All of the actors were competent. The principal lead characters were all uniformly good looking; no surprise there. The two actress leads were particularly attractive. That always helps a film's success.
For a romantic drama, there was virtually no passion or even inferred sexuality. The audience was left to wonder when, or if, the characters ever consummated their romance. Everyone was fully clothed. When characters spent the nite together the actress was clothed under the sheets and her partner was fully clothed on top of the sheets. The film had a 1950's Western sensibility/vibe to it.
Still, it was a pleasant, though somewhat bland, trip to the flics.
