Review of Somewhere in Time (1980) by Stephen M — 18 Mar 2008
I don't believe I have ever met a person who didn't love this film. I think that the romance, the innocence, the beauty of the movie make it impossible to not love, or at least like, it. The dialogue is easy going and fun, it's serious and romantic without becoming cliche and ham fisted. The period scenes have art direction and costuming that doesn't distract from the story, even though they are all first rate. The actors are all accesible, whether they are likeable (like Reeve and Seymour) or not (like the great Plummer) and the characters are very clearly defined and fully realized, both by author and by actor.
Is there anyone in the world who hasn't heard John Barry's theme from Somewhere In Time and fallen in love? I doubt it. What would the world of movies have been like without John Barry, eh?
Definately, in my opinion, the greatest screen romance of all time. At least in the top five; but (for me) the best.
