Review of Somewhere in Time (1980) by Brad R — 23 Sep 2012
Even 30 years later, the time travel adventure "Somewhere in Time" remains a prime example of convoluted, condescending storytelling that assumes we care about its characters simply because the music swells and the protagonists say "I love you.
" The screenplay is a flat mess, the time travel makes very little sense, the direction is sloppy, and even leads Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour have little to do with what thin material they're given.
Rest assured, John Barry's magnificent score and Jean-Pierre Dorlac's commendable costume design are indeed some of the only remarkable qualities of this movie. That it has achieved such a high cult status remains flabbergasting, as an often forgotten, yet far superior time travel film released two years prior named "Time After Time" beats "Somewhere in Time" in every imaginable way.
Even a performance by Christopher Plummer as the delightfully slimy villain couldn't save this turkey.
