Review of Somewhere (2010) by Rainer K — 03 Dec 2011
Slowly but surely I discover more and more directors and their films and my list of films to watch grows and grows as I lately discovered Cronenberg, Allen and Lang to mention only a few and haven't even seen anything by von Trier, Jarmusch, Kurosawa or Hitchcock.
Thankfully, Sofia Coppola has only four films on her resume so I got nothing to lose with Somewhere - her fourth and latest.
Dancing (two twin pole dancers and the protagonist's daughter played by Elle Fanning) - silence (we mostly see Johnny Marco driving his Ferrari or lying on his bed drinking booze) - that's pretty much the first 20 minutes of the film.
It slowly loosens up a bit and develops some pace afterwards. Johnny Marco (played by Stephen Dorff) is an actor, and not much more. He neither has much personality nor any interests. He just sits there - in silence in his hotel room, occasionally having sex and going to parties (having more sex there).
His life is empty and so is he, but then arrives his daughter and stays with him for a few days and he's kind of loving and caring suddenly. First, you can see how unfamiliar with the situation he is but than he becomes a lesser phantom and re-evolves into a genuine human being.
Well-acted and in a way good but too vacuous for my taste.
