Although its not as great as Sofia Coppola's previous film "Lost in Translation" she is still able to capture a very lonely atmosphere surrounding the life of main character Johnny (Stephen Dorff) who is looking for a way to fill this empty void in his life. When his daughter enters the screen after about forty minutes of showing how Johnny's been choosing to fill that void with drugs, alcohol, sex and elongated scenes of nothing happening to show that emptiness, in comes his daughter played by Elle Fanning who suddenly seems to fill up that void.

While Somewhere does appear to have some pacing issues, Sofia Coppola's beautiful symbolic cinematography makes up for most of that and the terrific performances from Dorff and Fanning help to make Somewhere a touching, albeit depressing film as well.
