Review of Somewhere (2010) by Dave R — 02 May 2011
I like sofia coppola's style of shooting - she's very good at capturing the mundaneness of life that often is lacking in films. however, this film seems a bit too autobiographical to me which I find distracting. you get the feeling she is cleo in this film and that johnny is her dad. therefore she she's working out some daddy issues - the distraction for me.
The story is about a hollywood actor who is existential bored with his life ("lost in translation" anyone?). but magically he is transformed by spending time with the daughter he hasn't really been there for (sofia's experience?).
It's not a bad movie but it just feels like coppola working out/on themes she's already done before - in particular, "lost in translation".
