Review of Somewhere (2010) by Darren J — 13 Jul 2011
Stephen Dorff gives a somber but effective performance in Sofia Coppola's story of a Hollywood star sinking into "Charlie Sheen" territory until bonding with his daughter makes him rethink his life.
Coppola uses the same laid back style as she did with the great Lost In Translation and while this film never comes close to that flick, it does help to establish an overall mood here as we watch Dorff's 'Johnny' discover his inner dad.
Somewhere might be too slow moving for some but, I find Coppola's style a bit refreshing from the in your face dramatics and cliched melodramatics that similarly themed films often are made with.
