Review of Somewhere (2010) by Denise O — 17 Jan 2012
In Somewhere, Sofia Coppola turns her attention to the world of Hollywood; focusing on a self-involved actor, the day he suddenly snaps out of the fog and realizes he really does have a daughter, his relationship with her, and how this sudden reality drives him to start re-examining his life.
Stephen Dorff (one of my favorites) plays Johnny Marco an actor who gets everything he needs to enjoy his life without the emotional attachment that goes with love or friendship. Elle Fanning (1/2 of what I like to call the soon-to-be Fanning Dynasty) sweetly plays his 11-year-old daughter who he gets visitation rights to see him on weekends when he is in town.
Complications arise and Elle's visit with Stephen ends up being way longer than he originally anticipated. They work well with each other portraying these characters and, along with Sofia's directing, make you feel like you are actually watching two people.
