Review of Something's Gotta Give (2003) by Deb S — 09 Dec 2010
Jack Nicholson is terrific as aging playboy Harry Sanborn, a 63-year old recording company executive, who has never been married and has a thing for younger women. His latest catch, the knock out 31 year old Marin (Amanda Peet), takes him to her mother's summer home expecting to spend some time alone, but instead they are surprised by her mother, played by Diane Keaton (a successful playwright and divorcee who has avoided any entanglements since her marriage ended years ago) and Zoe (her aunt, played by the tragically under-used Frances McDormand).
Erica's first reaction is to leave immediately and let Marin and Harry have the place to themselves but Zoe being the laid-back, modern schoolteacher that she is convinces her sister to stay. After a dinner filled with awkward silences and bad timing, the night culminates with Harry having a heart-attack whilst seducing the beautiful Marin.
And now the plot thickens. Enter handsome, dashing, young and very eligible Dr. Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves) who tells Harry that he can't go anywhere yet because they need to keep a close watch on his heart.
Poor Erica ends up babysitting him.
