Review of Something the Lord Made (2004) by Bob H — 15 Jul 2007
Remarkable film to say the least. Not only is this film a touching portrayal of the true events based around two gentlemen responsible for innovating the treatment for the "Blue Baby" Syndrome, but it also is a filmic representation of a Christ-figure as well.
Mos Def plays Vivian Thomas, lab assistant of Dr. Alfred Blalock. Who, later is recognized with a doctorate degree from Johns-Hopkins University for his wonderful addition to the medical field. Vivian can definately be viewed as the Christ-figure.
For example, within the university there is a statue of Jesus extending his arms. Vivian is shown in the same camera shot as this statue more than once. This is a symbolic comparison. There are a few expletives vocalized towards Vivian, where a character would shout,"Jesus!" at Vivian.
These are just two out of many examples within the film. Outstanding direction! ... "Great Physician." :P .
