Review of Something Borrowed (2011) by Albert G — 07 Oct 2011
More than just a rom-com, it is also about the love in friendships -- even the most unlikely ones. You end up not caring just about the love triangle but about the relationship between Goodwin's nerdy type and Hudson's party girl/cheerleader type.
Krasinski adds yet another dimension into the friendship part of the story. The development is also effectively non-linear: elements of the story are revealed gradually, especially the events of the past and how they affect the present.
This is your first hint that the story will not follow the usual rom-com formula, but resolves in a surprising but satisfying way. The acting is superb, delivering characters that you end up caring about.
Hudson delivers her usual mastery, but this movie has made me a bigger fan of Goodwin, with her portrayal that is always somewhere between "plain Jane" and "girl of your dreams".
