Review of Something Borrowed (2011) by Skyler B — 20 Jan 2013
Something Borrowed is not a complete failure, but well, let's start off with saying that it has a big lack of good acting and a tremendously huge lack of originality. I didn't like it at all, it seemed endless and I was starting to be too bored, I don't recommend it to anybody, it's predictable and it's cliché-packed and we all know what's going to happen at the end. What I hated, was the pointless and idiotic ending for this movie's only 'great', who was John Krasinski, who was the only guy who brought this movie humor and made it more believable, but they didn't even take an advantage of that. Something Borrowed is just one of those annoying rom-coms, it's mostly bad because of Kate Hudson who was just terrible, terrible and terrible, she was completely annoying and it looked like she wanted her fiancé and her best friend to be together, I hated when she said: "If a couple was based on its similiarities, than you two would be a couple." I just hated that and one other thing, what's with the post-credits thing, or should I say, middle of the credits thing? All the certain, we see Ethan (Krasinski) in Paris talking with some people and than Darcy (Kate Hudson) shows up and says hi, but he runs away and then we see big words that mention: "To Be Continued...", I didn't get that at all and I'm telling you, if this movie will have a sequel, wich I think it will definitely won't, I have some serious doubts if I'm going to watch it or not, for one simple reason, Something Borrowed is a cliché, it's completely boring, it's typical and it's one of the most unsatisfying movies I've ever seen. Bad movie.
Luke Greenfield directed, I don't know what he was thinking when he based a movie on a book loaded of cliché's. Ginnifer Goodwin takes the lead, she was no big deal, again, she took a stupid role like she did in He's Just Not That Into You, sow, it was almost impossible to like her performance, Ginnifer is known from Big Love, Walk the Line, He's Just Not That Into You and some other movies. Kate Hudson, the Oscar-Nominated woman who's also entered many matinees where she played awful roles, has just now entered the movie, where she easily played the worst role of her entire career, she was just awful and I hated her here, she couldn't seem to stop annoying me, this movie is bad, a bit because of her, Kate is known from Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and some other movies. Colin Egglesfield just felt too artificial, so I didn't like his performance, Colin is known from Beutiful Dreamer and some other movies. John Krasinski was fantastic, I'm probably exagerating, but comparing his performance to every other thing in the movie just makes me think that, he had a solid role and he was very funny, I just loved his performance and I'm sad his character had a stupid and unclichéd ending that we wish it was a cliché instead of the other things that we don't want to be a cliché be a cliché, oh, and by the way, there was just a terrible scene where Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) turns 30 and at her party, Darcy (Kate Hudson), starts to talk about her dream wedding bla, bla, bla and all the certain, Ethan (K), whipsers: "Wait, who's party are we celebrating?", I mean, that was just genius and right at the heat of the moment, I laughed out loud and that was easily this movie's best scenes, I'll never forget that quote that John praise that made us think that he's the only smart person in the movie and he knows that all the rest is stupid. This part, just shows how much talent John has and it's not used so much, he should get more role offers, John is known from my favorite show, wich is The Office, he is also known from License to Wedd, Leatherheads and some other movies. Sow, as you can see, this movie has a good cast, but exept for the supporting performance, all the three leads suck. Good cast.
Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a 30 year old lawyer. Her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) is about to take the biggest step of her life by getting engaged to Dex (Colin Egglesfield), Rachel's crush since she was at law school. Now, Rachel, will have to handle her life next to her best friend with her crush, where she'll be helped by her best boyfriend, Ethan (John Krasinski). It's a thin line between love and friendship.(What I thought about the plot) The plot sucks, it's a cliché, but well, it's not completely lacked of originality, because at the ending there was an interesting twist that made us thought if everything was going to change, but later, every thing got back as we thought, clichéd way. The characters sucked, we have the crush - Dex -, we have to woman in love - Rachel -. we have the annoying girl - Darcy - and we have the supportive character - Ethan - altough it was a fantastic character, without a doubt the best thing they've done witht he script, Ethan was a very interesting character, but still, aside from that, Something Borrowed's plot sucks. Bad plot.
Soundtrack, well, the soundtrack was no big deal, just some forgettable piano themes that was also one of the things that showed that they didn't care about doing anything good with it.
Besides all that, I am now going to tell you what I really thought about this movie. First of all, Something Borrowed is nothing more nothing less than something boring, I didn't like it at all, it's typical and stupid, I really don't recommend this, I mean, this just shows how much they want to get money cause how could a grown man have directed this piece of crap? Overall, Something Borrowed sucks entirely, aside from John/Ethan, this movie has nothiing good or even great, I liked the twist but it was just a small distraction, nothing more than that, Something Borrowed has a good cast but terrible performances (Exept for Krasinski), a bad plot and it's very boring, it looks endless. I was going mad after almost 2 hours of pure unsatisfaction. I don't recommend this movie at all and another thing, I wish Hudson's performance was forgettable, but it wasn't, because it was so awful that I'll unfortunately never forget it. Don't even think of watching this piece of crap, just a time-waster. Something Borrowed: 4.0/10. Bad.
Bad movie. Not recommended movie. Grade: C.
