Review of Somers Town (2008) by Simon R — 18 Oct 2009
First of all let me say that This Is England was one of the greatest independent British films I have ever seen.
Somers Town was perfectly painted with the black and white and the grim story.
Sadly though, I didn't see a point in making this film.
There were really funny parts in it when the two kids were being boys and getting into trouble.
The parts that the British kid had to clean the man's house and help him out was great...asking the man if he had to sexual things and the man just looks at him like he is retarded.
That is a fabulous scene because throughout the film, you are wondering the exact same thing and finally he says something that gets it out and the table.
Thomas Turgoose shines once again in other gritty movie where he carries all the weight and lifts this movie along. His performance is brilliant in anything.
The long and boring foreign parts really slowed the film down though. They were funny to a point, after reading the subtitles fora bout 10 minutes and wondering where this scene is going got a bit much.
The ending was really good, the music was perfect and all of a sudden you realize that it is in colour and has been for the past 5 minutes.
A great "short" (if you want to call it that) film from Shane Meadows who blew me away with This Is England.
Do watch it you have a chance.
