Review of Somers Town (2008) by Georgios L — 04 Feb 2010

I thought this was quite beautiful and moving if not a bit short. In spite of that, I think that the mood and characters are established with the help of very little in the way of dialogue. There are little episodes of action seperated by long sequences where basically nothing happens; the film gives a chance to have a think about everything that's happened.

The film doesn't aspire to be some big work of art and I found the ending very good and full of hope. The colour comes back in the characters' lives. The film struggles to find beauty in the industrial area that it is filmed; however some of the scenes are really beautiful.

Worth checking out. It gave me a chance to get acquainted with Shane Meadows' work and I am definitely going to see more of his films.
