Review of Someone Like You... (2001) by Gareth R — 21 Oct 2007
You'd think that with Greg Kinnear and Hugh Jackman on board this might be passable fluff. It isn't. It's about a thirtysomething getting dumped and then meeting a notorious womaniser and formulating a theory on how men aren't monogomous.
.. I mean, is there even any point summarising it? Obvious from the start, yet slow on plot (Ashley Judd's heroine eventually adopts a pseudonym and publishes her "revolutionary" theory on how men are a bit easy, gasp!) this is dull, lifeless and notably low on comedy.
Kinnear and Judd phone in their deceased performances (although Judd does seem to be going for some sort of irritating Meg Ryan effect), while Hugh Jackman seems unsure how to play his drab, by-the-numbers lothario, but since none of the characters have any discernable personality, he fits right in.
The ending is forced, the ideas are painfully old hat and there isn't one redeeming feature in the movie - so while it isn't actively rotten, there's no reason to recommend it. This is known as "Animal Attraction" in Britain, for all it matters.
Worthless and time-consuming.
