Review of Some Mother's Son (1996) by Claire K — 04 Aug 2007
Powerful drama about the IRA Hunger strike that took place in the 1980's. Expect to feel angry and want to burn Thatcher alive. Men starved themselves to death for the right to be treated as political prisoners in what was the Guantanamo Bay of that time.
Mirren is her usual terrific self, and she actually funded a lot of the film because she believed so passionately about the subject matter. The soundtrack is excellent too, well worth a listen on its own merits.
Quite simply, this is my favourite film.
