Review of Some Like It Hot (1959) by William B — 25 Sep 2010
Monroe...
The greatest pin up girl the world has ever seen. Sexy, willing and seductive. Perfect really. So what better role for this stunning figure than a dumb blonde right bang in the middle of two guys dressed up as womens because they need money. Couldn't get much more interesting or funny than that.
Men dressing up as women for whatever reason has always been so easy to make a comedy out of: Tootise, Mrs Doubtfire.
But this old classic of leading two lives as two different genders tops it all in my books.
Joe and Jerry are two run down musicians just barely getting through life with whatever money they can scoop up, even if that means going to the extents of dressing up as two women calling themselves Josephine and Daphne and joining an all girls band where along the way they realise many many interesting facts from seeing the world through a womens eyes inside of the usual horn-dog men, which even with the comedy contains many traits of how men act towards women (Badly).
But obviously things get bumpy when they meet Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, the sexy, sassy, saxphone lover payed by none other than the sexiest actress Marilyn Monroe. And it's this women who would change these two men and create some of the funniest scenes in comedy history.
The genius behind this comedy is the clever mix of very slapstick scenes, quick firing marx brothers humour and also the confusion between the two men about their gender (at some points). And the inclusion of the mafia types as well adds to the effect of the slapstick scenes of Joe and Jerry changing clothes to run away from the dumb mafia thugs. Humour that'll never die.
Some Like It Hot is definitely a comedy that everyone should watch espeically if you've seenm films such as Tootsie, because you can see where there gender cross dressing humour came from and how it has always been a dam funny idea.
And you'll be able to see why Marilyn Monroe will always be in the top 3 sexiets actresses ever.
5/5.
