For a 1950's comedy about sex, this movie stood the test of time remarkably well. Indeed, maybe Some Like it Hot has only gotten better with the years: the filmmakers probably weren't aware of the queer undertones that are so apparent for today's viewers, or that the self-destructive sides of Monroe's character were actually autobiographical.

But you should see this movie not for these curiosities, but for the quality of the script. Not only does it provide effective situation comedy, it's also filled with witty dialogue. The actors have the responsiblity of making the script come alive, and they do so in extraordinary fashion. Curtis and Lemmon look as if they're having a lot of fun together, and as for Marilyn Monroe... Well, she's Marilyn Monroe alright. She obviously has all the charm in the world, and her song performances are among the highlights of the film. Contrary to what the marketing might suggest, her role is relatively small - but she shines through and through.

While I think Some Like it Hot really is timeless, this doesn't mean it's a masterpiece. It's just a comedy that's a lot of fun to watch, even decades after it was made.
