Review of Some Like It Hot (1959) by Donald W — 08 Feb 2013
Guys In DragThis is supposed to be the funniest movie made. I don't know about that. I've seen funnier, but anytime you put two guys in drag you get an automatic laugh. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were very funny dressed as women.
There are a lot of inside jokes about historical events, Hollywood, other movies and actors. The two main characters supposedly witness the St. Valentines Day massacre. The real massacre didn't happen the way they showed in this movie and the gangsters were all fictional, but they were in a garage and the victims were lined up against the wall.
One of the subtle jokes here was that they were going to drive 100 miles on 40 cents worth of gas. Marilyn Monroe looked good except when she was on the beach. Supposedly she was pregnant while making this movie which made her look fat.
They also put her and all the other women in the film in 1920's style bathing suits. Most of the women in the all female band are good looking. I first saw this movie on TV in 1969 at my Grandmother's house on a black and white TV.
She could only get two stations in southeast Oklahoma so it was either on Channel 10 Ada or Channel 12 out of Sherman Texas. This movie has been a standard on late night movie channels or independent stations.
