Review of Some Like It Hot (1939) by Lauren F — 15 Mar 2010
The movie, Some Like It Hot (1959) directed by Billy Wilder is one of a kind. I really enjoyed the humor as well as the plot. The characters all fit perfectly with their roles and it kept me interested. This was my first time seeing a Marilyn Monroe film and I have to say I am impressed. Her acting was so modern as well as her look. She wasn't like any ordinary actor during the 1950's, which made her so popular. She was the first "dumb blonde" of the golden age it seemed! The acting by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon was outstanding. They made the movie hilarious. I actually thought that Tony Curtis looked like a girl at the beginning of the movie, which was weird. I am a big fan of the 50's film style, with the gangsters and flappers. It's interesting to see how people lived during that time; it seemed wild. However, the relationship between the two guys is now a common plot in film and TV today. The competitive best friends, who treat each other like crap. It works every time and everyone gets a good laugh out of it. There is always the one guy who dominates and gets what he wants, while the other is stuck hating his life.
This movie reminded me of so many movies dealing with a boy pretending to be a boy, vice versa. The plot is common and has been recycled through out the history of movies. Some example would be Disney's, Mulan, She's The Man and Shakespeare In Love. All these films have characters pretending to be the opposite sex but fall in love and go back and fourth. It always makes for a good movie, and I would recommend a Marilyn Monroe film to all my friends. I can't wait to see another one of her film's, she's quite the character.
