Review of Some Like It Hot (1939) by Paul B — 16 Nov 2014
Some Like It Hot, by today's standards, is relatively flawed; underdeveloped villains is perhaps the most blatant issue with the entirety of the film. Some bad jokes and puns, as well as an overindulgent monologue or two litter the film, consistently taking the viewer out from the experience. Nevertheless, it is a still a comedy that is composed of surprisingly versatile and respectable wit, and is headed by confident and hilarious performances from Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.
As a younger viewer seeing this for the first time, I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of comedic ingenuity displayed within the two hour running time. Whilst it's perhaps not the best comedy around, for the time where it was released, it is both a technical and practical achievement to behold; something worthy of high acclamation. A highly inventive film, whether in regards to screenwriting, editing, comedic camerawork or pace; it's just a plain fun film to watch!
