Review of Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) by Barbara D — 16 Mar 2010
I only watched this movie because my sister rented it and she was begging me to watch it with her. She eventually convinced me when she said, "Come on, it's got 80s people in it! Plus, it's got that chick from Back to the Future!".
To me, this era was when teen movies were still good. Back then, John Hughes was the man for the job because even though he had grown up, he hadn't forgotten what it was like to be a teenager. There are many of those themes in this movie, especially with the main guy's father not understanding him.
The movie also had the opportunity to resort to a number of cliches, but didn't. For example, they could've made Amanda a bitch, so you can understand why she and Keith weren't right for each other. Sometimes in life though, you have to make tough decisions with people who are good, so this movie really reflected that.
There were only two problems I could find with this movie. 1: It's obvious that Keith's best friend is in love with him and then at the end he suddenly likes her! It had hardly any build up or anything and it just seemed to pop out of nowhwere for the sake of him ending up with her! 2: That version of Can't Help Falling in Love that plays at the end of the movie is the single WORST version of that song I have ever heard. It was excruciating. It sounded like a bunch of kids who were still learning how to play instruments and were just messing around. That's not a good thing!
Oh well, the rest of the movie made up for it.
