Review of Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) by Conner R — 27 Sep 2010
It might be cliched and follow the stereotypes of high school, but I don't really care. That's what all the John Hughes movies have in them, so it's to be expected. This definitely has the least amount of cheese and sappiness in the bunch, having very real characters at the center of everything.
The overbearing soundtrack sort've works in this due to the amount of attention around music and pop culture. Eric Stoltz is great because he doesn't play a flat out geek or nerd, he's just a shy teenager who's unpopular.
That's totally relatable to me, so maybe I'm biased in my opinion. But there's also Mary Stuart Anderson and Lea Thompson who aren't the traditional hotties either, they've got very real problems.
While some dialogue does seem like it's repetitive, that's exactly how 18 year olds dealing with relationship issues act. The lack of confidence and indecisiveness among them is completely true, even today.
I think it's actually one of the best 80s teen movies, if not the best. This covers so much ground and deals with a huge range of emotions that high school kids deal with on a daily basis.
