Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Knut F — 20 Aug 2010
Take Van Helsing with a darker undertone, add Constantine and a few band members from Slipknot and you have Solomon Kane.
Solomon is an English noble cut off from his inheritance, turned mercenary. While fighting the Spaniards under Queen Elizabeth I in northern Africa he is faced with a demon who wants to claim his soul for the Devil. This major WTF moment makes him reconsider his evil ways and go into hiding in a Monastery for a year.
When he is forced to leave his sanctuary he is a changed man bent on refusing to resort to violence or killing again. His new lifestyle is immediately put to the test when he is attacked by three highway robbers. Beaten unconscious he is found by a family of Pilgrims heading for America. When they later are assaulted by the forces of the evil Sorcerer Malachi he is again tested; should he sacrifice his soul and again take up his sword?
This movie doesn't have much of a story, but I find the anti-hero Kane interesting, and it works pretty well as hack n' slash type of adventure with plenty of makeup effects and lots of severed body parts.
