Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Melanie K — 21 Apr 2011
It's a shame it took me so long to find out about this movie because it is one damn fine sword & fantasy one. It has a bit of a "Van Helsing" touch to it but is much darker and way more violent.
"Solomon Kane" is gritty and broody, has more than decent CGI effects and awesome action scenes. It takes the movie a bit to pick up pace but then it leads to a great final that keeps you at the edge of your seat.
James Purefoy's performance is amazing, especially considering that he's basically carrying the movie all alone. The rest of the cast makes the best of the parts they've been given to but cannot keep up with Purefoy.
Klaus Badelt's really good score fits the movie's atmosphere perfectly and supports the action well. "Solomon Kane" is one of those far underestimated movies that deserve more attention that it ever got.
Pity. I definitely enjoyed watching it.
