Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Ej A — 28 Sep 2012
The writers and filmmakers jettisoned all the Kane stories in favor trying to build a backstory for our solemn, brooding Puritan. I had low expectation going in, but the filmmakers never even got close to the character.
This Kane is sympathetic, expressive, and not a solitary figure at all. Plus, he never goes to Africa, never fights vampires, doesn't get his juju staff, nothing. This movie has nothing to do with Howard's original short stories.
If he watched this, he'd be very confused. The effects, what there is of them, are just slightly above SYFY cheese-fests. Even one doesn't know anything about Solomon Kane going into this movie, he/she would probably find it boring.
