Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Joey J — 14 Aug 2013
Crap.
Sloppy, disjointed writing. So disappointed, I suppose I shouldn't have been. Came out in the UK in 2009 and didn't make it here until 2013, and then only on DVD. I had hoped for a gem that had gone unnoticed, like "Outlander".
Other complaints:
-Lack of character development. He shifts easily from bloodthirsty rogue to pious man back to bloodthirsty killer.
-Orchestra volume. The orchestra is supposed to enhance the scene, not take it over.
-Thugs. The thugs that are transformed from bandits into evil soldiers just happen to all (except for one) have shaved heads like the rest of the evil soldiers. It would be fine if you're trying the "lice" argument if some of the peasants also were bald.
-The fire demon was a little too reminiscent of the Balrog from Fellowship of the Ring.
-Maybe explain the script tattoo on the main bad guy's face and his fall from grace.
-Predictable. His brother's fate. Really?
There's more that pissed me off, but I'll leave at that.
