Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Keyonta L — 04 Sep 2013
"Solomon Kane" is a movie about a murderous warrior who discovers that he is destined for hell because of his evil ways. For selfish reasons, he tries to redeem himself through a life of quiet devotion and non violence until he is forced into action and once more damned for hell, only this time in order to do what is right.
Solomon Kane is the best fantasy movie you've never seen and it's about a murderer turned Puritan fundamentalist who battles demons and the evil in his own soul. The tone and style reminds me of the manga "Berserk.
His appearance is reminiscent of Van Helsing or Vampire Hunter D, and the theme of the movie has some mild similarities to Constantine, though it's not really similar to any of these. Most of all, the simplistic but earnest drive of the narrative is in keeping with the style of the stories that the movie is based on and acts as a prequel/origin story for (think Batman Begins but for this character).
It's not the best movie and there are serious flaws, but I have a real affection for it and it's worth viewing.
