Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Marshall W — 29 Dec 2018
Solo a Star Wars story, I may have a bad feeling about this. The Ron Howard helmed film has been shrouded in controversies that were headlined by the departure of original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
These controversies have directly influenced the final product. Solo is a fun film but has little substance and relies on over-saturation of references with a lack of vision. Solo feels like a carbon copied screenplay of past Star Wars films which has become a trend in recent years.
Although, there is plenty of potential in this film, the negatives out-weigh the few positives. The over-reliance of references created a film that was more interested in a game of wheres Waldo than creating a complete and individual story.
Some great imagery and performances are what kept this movie afloat. Solo allowed me to see that Hon Solo is not interesting enough as a character to carry his own film. The character has no depth and that comes from the over-reliance on the cool guy persona.
The world of Star Wars is vast, let us hope they are able to create unique films going forward.
