Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Mary H — 02 May 2010
Reminiscent of a film from earlier last decade named "Roger Dodger", "Solitary Man's" title character (played by Michael Douglas) is a sex-obsessed pessimist, once dubbed "NYCs only honest car dealer" whose life goes awry once the doctor's alerts him to a heart ailment.
He begins to deal out very foul advice to the women he wants to sleep with and to a young protégé, eerily played by "Roger Dodger's" young protege, Jesse Eisenberg, now a college sophomore.
The film is quite grim but the performances feel very restrained despite the intense dialog. The film's point is extremely narrow and obvious but I do admire it's desire to be so dark, which is rare in a Hollywood film with this much star talent.
Still, this is fairly thin stuff that just doesn't captivate.
