Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Kmm . — 22 Nov 2010
Douglas = Excellent.
Built around a helpless man, the story tells of him needing only one thing in life; a rational mind. He was once a big shot living satisfyingly with his wife and child. Unfortunately, one day, after going through a medical check-up, he learns that he may have some kind of health problem. So, he gets all nervous and decides to indulge in sins. He cheats on his wife (then on the next) and screws up his job. Amazing, ain't it? Although this might seem pretty good, but really, the movie would not have lasted 15 minutes had it not been for Douglas.
Michael Douglas. How many times has he appeared in villain-cum-smooth-talking roles? He reverberates a certain touch of arrogance mixed with a tinge of heroic rooting vigor. But, you would have to watch to believe it. Please. Other characters were played pretty well, in fact. I mean, we needed the strong minority to encircle the amazing character of Douglas. The whole acting plot was always down to Douglas, and other roles had to build around that. That is where the characterization needed to excel in and greatly, it did.
I don't even need to repeat the fact that this was good watching. Could it have been boring? Possibly, but with Douglas, you never get a dull moment. Surprisingly, this movie even provides the quirky one-off memorable quotes. Whether we want it or not, we just have to like where the movie was heading to.
Bravo, bravo, bravo, Douglas.
Personally* ... There should be a Douglas genre.
