Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Vladmire P — 10 Sep 2011
Despite the fact he chose womanizing at age 60 over his family, I related in many ways to the Michael Douglas character of Ben - his life of wins and far too frequent losses at the hands of his workaholism and weakness to the ways of the woman struck a poignant note.
There are some great characters in this story as Ben comes to the realization, for better and worse, of what his life has led him to. Thing is, one is left unsure what he regrets and what he does not. He has most certainly learned quite a bit, but done most of that learning the hard way with himself as his own worst enemy. But one wonders if he would change things if given the chance.
The subplot of his health and the final moments put a perfunctory point to this well-written and well-acted film.
It also makes this viewer damn certain he will not allow his life to end up in this mostly sad and pathetic state.
