Review of Solaris (2002) by Darryl J — 22 Jun 2008
I can't review this without comparing it to the original. I know I shouldn't but I can't not. Soderbergh doesn't skip out on the source material. It's essentially the same story. The 1972 version seemed to be more detached from space and sci-fi like Tarkovsky wanted. This felt more sci-fi because of the special effects.
By itself, this is a great film. George Clooney and Natascha McElhone were perfect and had real chemistry. I wish Natascha McElhone was in more films. I really really like her. I think we all know that Soderbergh is a good director by now. It's apparent in this.
In short, this is like Solyaris without all the magic that has made it one of the most enduring films of all time.
