Review of Solaris (2002) by Galuh T — 18 Jan 2009
Solaris is not a film for everyone, in particular those who want to see a movie with a short attention span. Solaris is a SCI-FI film from past, and all like all SCI-FI films from the past - you can put its running time, pacing, editing, and tone in one or two categories. 2001: Space Odysessy, or Star Wars.
Solaris definitly falls into the former. Part moving art, part orchestra, and partly a stage drama all the pieces are in place. From the slow moving camera, low voices, and rumbling atmopshere that makes up the city on earth and the spacecraft near Solaris - you have a very old school style of shooting a SCI-FI drama.
If you can't emerse yourself in the cinematopraphy, the score, and the story - again its probably not for you. Moving into what you will like, I need to leave that one to you. Like art, everybody takes away something different - something they focus on - something they look for everytime they see it. Solaris (2002) is a lot like that.
