Review of Society (1989) by Jeremy R — 07 Jan 2010
Society is fuckin' great for so many reasons. The effects, the feel, and the message were perfect. Screaming Mad George should have won some kind of award for the makeup work that he did. I had truly underestimated Brian Yuzna as a director for the longest time.
In the last few years I've come to know the error of my ways. The orgy scene alone more than justifies this movie's existence (for those of you who have seen it, I'm sure you'll agree).
This movie should be celebrated, but it seems to be largely forgotten, it's a shame. I mean, it's got all of the ingredients that make up a classic 80s splatterfest (big hair, big tits, and gloriously gross effects, served with a generous helping of irreverence), and the social commentary is dead on (at least among the rich people I've had the displeasure of coming across).
If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have, see it again.
