Review of Society (1989) by Mike S — 08 Jul 2011
When I saw the Wes Craven 1991 shocker The People Under the Stairs, I thought, "Wow, this is one weird movie". I later saw such films as Phenomena, I also thought they were incredibly weird. Then I happened upon Society.
It starts off kind of weird, but by the time you get to the "shunting" it's just insanity. Billy Warlock does a great job as Bill Whitney, the paranoid teen confident that society is out to get him.
He reminded me a lot of Michael J. Fox and that's not a bad thing. The rest of the performers are good as well, and you've got to give them credit for taking part in the "shunting". OK, you're probably wondering what the "shunting" is.
The truth is, I can't explain it. It's just so disturbing and unthinkable, you really cannot put it into words. It's not Cannibal Holocaust disturbing, it's like goofy disturbing. The FX by Screaming Mad George during this scene were great.
So is Society recommended? Most definitely. After all, there's nothing better than the smell of the hunt...and the taste of the shunt. Oh, and bonus points for the butthead joke.
