Review of So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993) by Dave B — 17 Aug 2011
"woman... woe-man... whoooa-man. She was a thief, you gotta believe, she stole my heart and my cat. Betty, Judy, Josie and those hot Pussycats... they make me horny, Saturday morny... girls of cartoo-ins will leave me in ruins... I want to to be Betty's Barney. Hey Jane... get me off this crazy thing... called love.".
This is an underrated comedy and not one that many know Mike Myer by. It's refreshing to see Mike Myers play in a role that?M)s not eccentric because it's so different from the other characters he buries himself in. Don't get me wrong his characters are all treasured from Wayne to Austin Powers to Shrek, but it's nice to see him play a somewhat normal guy. In I Married an Axe Murderer he plays Charlie who is a San Francisco poet that falls for a girl named Harriet. She may or may not be an Axe Murderer.
This has some great laughs in it and yea it may have some jokes that don't work, but it's far outweighed by the former. Everything from his poetry readings (woman! Wooooooo-man!), to playing his Scottish Father to perfection "Head! Move!" to his romantic comedic dialogue with Harriet. Alan Arkin is great as a police chief and Phil Hartman delivers a hilarious one scene performance as an Alcatraz tour guide. So I Married an Axe Murderer is a silly love story one that's very much worth watching more than once for some good laughs. This is probably Mike Myers lowest grossing film, but one of his best. 8/10 from me.
