Review of So Close (2009) by Khai D — 19 Mar 2010
Despite having seen countless East Asian films, I am still sometimes uneasy about the incredible mix of genres within _one single_ film that is often the hallmark of East Asian films. Sometimes everything fits together marvellously (as in 'Running on Karma'), and sometimes it just annoys me -- as in So Close.
This film jumps from kick-ass action to cheesy romance, to espionage, to buddy cop, and then back to kick-ass action with just too much brusqueness to let me enjoy the story. [WARNING SPOILER] Also, the story only really moves up a gear once Shu Qi's character dies and her grieving sister teams up with the badass cop to take revenge, building up a hot Sapphic partnership in the process.
That makes for a great last third of the film, but it does not redeem the first two thirds.
