Review of Snowpiercer (2013) by Mark B — 20 Aug 2016
I don't know what to think of this film. It's like it's trying to be two different things at the same time. It feels like it wants to be a serious dystopian film and yet has occasional pockets of absurdity.
I think it would have worked better if they'd gone for full on, Terry Gilliam style, absurdity. Then there's the ending ***SPOILER ALERT***. In some ways it feels like they're ending on a hopeful note with the kids surviving the crash and seeing that life does exist beyond the train but on the other hand it feels like it is ending on quite a depressing note since those kids are likely to be ripped apart by what is probably a very hungry polar bear, and even if they don't, they don't have the knowledge to find their own food.
