Review of Snowpiercer (2013) by Michael P — 13 Jun 2015
Based on a French graphic novel, in a post-apocalyptic world, most of humanity has been wiped out with the few remaining survivors on board a train that circumnavigates the globe. Separated into carriages by class, the lower class at the back initiates a rebellion to get to the front. Snowpiercer excels at provoking thoughts on relevant themes, such as the environment and the human condition, making it a more interesting film. The film feels more unique than other more action orientated science fiction films released recently, it flows differently as you watch it. Like the director's other movie The Host (2006) the director seamlessly blends the intense action with light hearted comical moments. For a small film it has quite an impressive cast including Chris Evans, Ed Harris, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton.
Although this film has a limited release it should be viewed if the opportunity arises as it presents a thought-provoking storyline, led by a strong cast with a director that can intertwine the darker plot points with strange light-hearted moments. I have yet to read the graphic novel so I cannot compare the two yet.
