Review of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1938) by Jacob M — 22 May 2013
In Disney's first animated film, Princess Snow White is forced to be a slave by her evil stepmom, the Queen, due to her beauty. Because of this, she is told each day by the Magic Mirror that she is the fairest of them all. When that title passes to Snow White, the Queen, in a jealous rage, orders a huntsman to kill Snow off in the woods, but Snow White ends up escaping from the plot and ends up staying in a cottage filled with seven dwarfs, Doc, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, and Grumpy. Everything goes well until the Queen realizes she's still alive. She ends up disguising as an old hag and prepares a poisoned apple to kill off the famed princess. Can the dwarfs save her before it's too late?
As Walt Disney's first animated film, the stakes were high. Nobody thought that a cartoon would work out as a feature film, so many audiences were skeptical of the project, but still decided to see it anyway because they were interested in how it would turn out. They were surprised to learn that the film was actually a great achievement in film, and the film was given a standing ovation at the film's premiere and was the highest-grossing film of 1937.
In today's time, Snow White still holds up today as one of Disney's best films because it's story is so good at getting you, even if it's over 70 years old. People are annoyed at the Snow White character today, bit I still view her as one of Disney's finest female characters. The dwarfs are also funny and each have a great personality of their own, especially Grumpy. The villain is one of Disney's all-time best villains, and Lucille LaVerne's voice really gives me goosebumps.
The animation is outstanding, and the songs are catchy and fun, from "Heigh-Ho" to "Whistle While You Work.".
Disney raised the bar when Snow White was first released, and the great success of it would lead to many more great Disney classics.
