Review of Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) by Jonathan B — 18 Sep 2015
Great effects, and when Charlize Theron is onscreen as the evil Queen Ravenna, she owns it. The film is worth seeing for her; she has great presence and I was riveted by her troubled, powerful, revenge-driven character. The effects are a nice bonus. Theron's queen was given magical powers, so she could not only entrance us with her eerily focused evil, but also dazzle us with her spells and fury.
Another plus serving this movie was Chris Hemsworth's performance as the Huntsman. There isn't much to be said; he's a superhero. Instead of Thor's hammer, he brought an axe. He came in, saved the princess, and punched his card on the way out. "Meets expectations.".
Knock off a star for Kristen Stewart's performance as Snow White, or maybe just for the flat, unaffected writing of the character, which, sadly, had no magic.
I never really cared about her. Stewart comes off as the art school outcast more than a heroic princess in this film. This quality would serve her well in a lot of roles, including her part as the vampire outcast in "Twilight," but not the pure hearted, innocent Snow White.
After this, I might be interested in seeing her play Winona Ryder's part in "Heathers," but please, no more fairy tale princesses for KriStew.
