Review of Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) by David J — 21 Nov 2015
A fairy take remake with a twist if there ever was one, Huntsman sees Snow White being a hardened captive of the sinister and evil Queen from the near get-go. What starts out as a dark, stylish remake quickly becomes monotonous once the Huntsman appears and the film becomes much more light-hearted.
The cast is not at fault here. Charlize Theron is magnetic as the Queen Ravenna, CHris Hemsworth does as he's directed as the heroic huntsman, and Kristen Stewart is thankfully solid as the young princess. It is the script and the pacing of the film I have major problems with. Too many periods mired in poor character development and shifts from comedy to dark atmosphere. Awkwardly written lines. Huntsman is entertaining sometimes, but not very good for a premise with that kind of ambition.
