Review of Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) by Ben D — 30 Oct 2014
This is a pretty standard fantasy movie made worse with several other problems sprinkled in that make the movie way more awful than it should have been. First off is the acting. It's not that great.
Chris Hemsworth isn't bad, he just isn't worth mentioning. Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, however, give some truly terrible performances. Kristen Stewart is supposed to be portraying Snow White, a character full of kindness, generosity, and goodwill.
In the film it is said that she possesses some kind of figurative light that shines so brightly, that whoever can't see it, is blind. However, Stewart never does anything in the film that really exemplifies any of the previously mentioned characteristics nor does she do anything that would really give her a figurative light.
Charlize Theron is supposed to be playing an evil queen who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Unfortunately, her performance is so over the top that just comes off as hilarious rather than frightening.
There are actually a few moments in the film where her performance had a striking resemblance to a Nicolas Cage performance or perhaps a Looney Toons character. Second, the special effects did not cut it for me at all.
Every time CGI was used (which was a lot) it took me right out of the film's universe, because it looked so incredibly fake. My last problem is that someone thought it was a good idea to steal some things from other fantasy films.
The films that it stole from were The Neverending Story's drowning of a white horse in a swamp, the design of Princess Mononoke's Great Forest Spirit, and several shots that looked copy pasted out of The Lord of the Rings.
Without all these extra issues, the film probably would have gotten a 5/10, but unfortunately these problems are here to stay, so it gets a 2/10 from me.
