Review of Snow Falling on Cedars (1999) by Darrin H — 23 Feb 2009
There were a lot of artsy, lingering shots of slow-motion frolicking amidst the scenic Pacific northwest, which I can't say I found completely necessary. Also not sure that it wasn't in many ways equally racist for the femme fatale to ditch Ethan Hawke as she caved in to her family's pressure to keep it in the Asian gene pool (my favorite part was when Ethan Hawke told her in the car to shut her mouth about 'fairness').
It's an evocative movie, but really rather one-sided, with the typical "small-town, blue-collar, white America is narrow-minded and bad" stereotypes. As a result, it's easy for me to say "The movie is well-made," but harder for me to say "I like this movie.
