Review of Snow Cake (2006) by Lisa A — 16 Apr 2008
I enjoyed this. I don't know if I would have had it not been for Alan Rickman. He gives a great performance as a quiet, thoughtful englishman on his way to visit someone from his past. He picks up a young girl who is hitchhiking and just as he comes to enjoy her company there is an accident which kills her.
He goes to see the mother out of guilt, but when he arrives and apologizes he doesn't quite get the emotional response he wants from her. She has autism and does not give the type of emotional responses that people are used to.
He ends up staying with her and becoming involved with the woman next door. All of these events help him to deal with his own personal demons. I thought this was a pretty standard little indie flick with good characters, some great performances, and a pretty decent script.
Some of it feels a little contrived, but you can't help but forgive it. I would say to give it a try.
